President’s Message

May 2, 2011 by

Well, we’re halfway through spring, and summer is right around the corner.

The first round of lawn fertilizing should be done and the sound of lawnmowers is in the air, Baseball fans have hope no matter their team, though a few hockey and basketball teams remain in the playoffs. The winter of 2011 left more than the average number of memories, but they’re starting to fade away.

Skiing and snowboarding are the furthest things from anyone’s minds, right?

Wrong!

Bad Gastein, Austria

By Randy Baustert, Trip Leader

A group of 45 CMSC club members flew Lufthansa to Munich and then bussed 3½ hours to Bad Gastein in late January, 2011.

We had icy slopes the first day, followed by four days of snow, which meant limited visibility, but lots of snow. The sixth day was sunny and beautiful.

Bad Gastein is only a small part of the Ski Amade ski pass but has plenty of skiing for a week without ever leaving the Gastein Valley. In six days we skied Graukogel, Sportgastein, Stubnerkogel to Bad Hofgastein and Dorfgastein to Grossarl—all in the Gastein Valley. One of our skiers used the bus and train system to venture out of the valley for a day of skiing in St Johann.

Alpine Valley is the largest ski resort in Southern Wisconsin. Located in Elkhorn, off of Interstate 43, Alpine Valley is within easy driving distance of Chicago, Milwaukee and Madison. The mountain features 12 lifts, two high-speed lifts and 20 ski runs ranging from beginner to expert mogul runs with 388 feet of vertical skiing. The longest run is 2,500 feet.

Alpine Valley has a terrain of 90 acres, making the mountain enjoyable and petite while offering the greatest height difference among ski mountains within an 85-mile radius. On average, seven feet of fluffy snow fall on the mountain every year, keeping Alpine Valley well covered during the winter season.

Chicago Week 2011 In Telluride

May 2, 2011 by

By Sue Finis, Trip Leader

Telluride was in for quite a shock when 250+ of us (13 ski clubs represented) invaded the town and Mountain Village to kick off Chicago Week 2011 from Feb 26-March 6. We had over 150 people staying at the Mountain Village and the rest staying in lodges and inns in the town itself. We couldn’t have asked for better weather or hospitality. The sun was out most of the time, the temperatures were in the 30s, the skiing was fantastic, and the socializing was in full force.

Big Sky, a Boyne resort, is located in Southwest Montana. Sprawling across three peaks, it has a total of 3,812 acres with 150+ named runs.

Big Sky boasts the second longest vertical drop in the country at 4,350 feet. The area has a variety of terrain, dependable snowfall and no lift lines.

In addition to all the great skiing offered at Big Sky, there is another resort, Moonlight Basin, which shares Lone Peak with Big Sky. Both resorts are accessible on an optional, interconnecting ticket called the Biggest Skiing in America Pass. Combined, there are over 5,500 acres of skiable terrain between both resorts, creating the largest continuous area of skiing in North America.
